The new runway (with a length of 2,800 metres) runs parallel to the existing take-off and landing runways. The axis distance to the northern runway is approx. 1,400 m. This allows for separate and parallel landing approaches on the new Northwestern runway and the existing Southern runway, unlike on the existing parallel runway system with its narrower dimensions. To the side of the newly built runway there is a parallel taxiway at a distance of 200 metres. Both the runway and the parallel taxiway are connected by six high-speed taxiways and one taxiway each at the Eastern and Western end of the runway. Two taxiways provide access to the airport's existing flight operation areas via the ICE train path, the A3 motorway and the airport ring. These two taxiways comprise five individual bridges; the taxiway bridge Ost1 and West1 are the largest and most complex. These two bridges are used by aircraft to cross the A3 motorway and the ICE train path. Also, there are another three bridges, West 2, Ost 2 and Ost 3. The West 2 and Ost 2 bridges pass over the airport ring road, while the Ost 3 bridge is located on the existing airport grounds. On the runway axis, the taxing bridge West 1 is more than 90 metres long and up to 117 metres wide. Also on the runway axis, the taxiway bridge Ost 1 is more than 200 metres long and up to 220 metres wide. Okrifteler Straße leads under the Northwest runway and connects the communities of Walldorf and Kelsterbach. The tunnel is almost 577 meters long and 18 metres wide. About 1.6 kilometres of Okrifteler Strasse were newly built - including cycle and foot paths. On the new runway, as well as on the existing runways, all-weather flight operations are possible, so that approaches according to ILS category IIIb can be made.
